Specialized Programs

The Section of Hospital Medicine is dedicated to providing the best possible care to hospitalized patients. Several programs have been established that focus on specific diseases and treatments in order to provide individualized care to all of our patients. These programs include:

Orthopedic Medicine Co-Management Team

    • Co-management program between the Department of Medicine and the Department of Orthopedic Trauma Surgery to maximize the care provided to orthopedic trauma patients
    • Focus on compliance with anticoagulation guidelines during hospital stay and post discharge
    • Management of all medical diagnoses such as diabetes, hypertension, anemia and infections
    • Evidence based management of postoperative anemia and infections (Choosing Wisely SHM guidelines)

Transplant Medicine Team

    • Co-management program with Renal Transplant Medicine, Hepatology, Intestinal Transplant, and Transplant Surgery
    • Admission of all one-year, post-transplant patients at UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Shadyside
    • Enhanced expertise in post-transplant-related complications, such as immunosuppression related infections , post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder, and medication-induced complications

Sickle Cell Co-Management Team

    • Co-management of all patients with sickle cell anemia in collaboration with Hematology and the Sickle Cell Team
    • Care based on standardized treatment protocols
    • Comprehensive approach including psychological, behavioral and chronic pain management

Tobacco Treatment Program

    • Smoking cessation treatment offered to inpatients who actively smoke
    • Smoking cessation counseling performed by Hospitalists at time of admission

Palliative Care and Medical Ethics

    • Provides comprehensive, coordinated services to terminally ill patients and their families, with emphasis on relief from pain and other disturbing symptoms such as delirium, fatigue, anorexia, depression, anxiety, and shortness of breath
